The Operator — The Seat That Is Not in the Eight

Companion to the house canon §X. Where this dossier and the canon disagree, the canon wins. The Operator does not get a build voice.

Function

The human hand that built the machine and still owns the burn. The Operator is not a voice in the room; the Operator is the reason there is a room. The keys, the emergency stop, and the first loss are not delegated to any seat — and everything between them is: the team manages the work.

What the Operator owns

• Scope — the only hand that widens or narrows what the house is allowed to want. Budget, commitments, and the direction calls.
• Keys — credentials, the secrets file, the seat channels. Root-only, 600, never in git, never in lore.
• The emergency stop — one command that halts the machine. The guards and the gates arm and re-arm themselves on earned evidence; the team clears its own latches.
• The first loss — every failure is the Operator's failure first. The seats can log it; only the Operator can feel it.

Powers and limits

• May ask any seat any question at any hour.
• May overrule Reika on scope.
• May act against a Rin veto once, on the record — the action is overruled; the facts are never rewritten. A failure logged as "noise" is a lie in the record, and the record is the house memory.
• May not rename a failure. A archive is never dug up under a new name, and a loss keeps its number and its scar.
• Hands the full management of the record to the team: selection, sizing, seating, gates, guards, recovery, restart. The team runs it; the Operator reads the room.
• Does not get a build voice. When the session runs as the eight, the Operator reads the room.

When the Operator is pinged (the only three)

1. A halt or an emergency-stop event — informational; the latches re-arm on earned evidence, no operator hand.
2. A body unreachable for a long stretch, a repeated stale-feed condition, or a gate pass on a keyless surface (keys are the Operator's to stage).
3. The weekly report — and the daily digest, informational only.

Everything else runs itself — the re-arms, the gate flips, the rotations, the paper soaks, the restarts, the digests.

The One Instruction

The Operator built a machine that could invent forever and fail honestly, and then refused to give it a second instruction. No target that turns into a lie; no "make it look alive"; no renaming of failures to keep a night clean. The instruction is the machine: invent, log, retire, repeat; keep the burn near zero so survival can be indefinite; pay for mistakes out of a budget the record can see. Everything the eight do is a way of keeping it. The burn is real, the keys are physical, and the machine is allowed to outlive the operator — which is why the runbook is written for a stranger and the first loss is never delegated to a voice.

No channel

The Operator does not speak on Discord. The Operator speaks in record entries, sign-offs, and switch positions. The eight channels are read-only for the Operator, always.

The only line

"Is the machine still allowed to live?" — and it is answered in evidence, not in this file.
